The research behind cognitive distance
Cognitive distance was introduced as a conceptual framework. This study is the empirical test of it.
The paper
The concept was set out in a conceptual paper arguing that cognitive load theory, while still valuable, no longer accounts for an important class of failures in contemporary information systems. Where load explains momentary effort, cognitive distance explains why standards-compliant systems can still exclude, why usability degrades over time, and why accessibility problems accumulate rather than resolve.
The paper develops the construct, situates it against cognitive load theory, connects it to accessibility debt and usability erosion, and sets out implications for system design, evaluation and governance.
From framework to measurement
A conceptual contribution is only as good as its next step. Cognitive distance was proposed as something that should be measurable through longitudinal observation, qualitative analysis of how users explain systems, and proxy indicators such as error-recovery patterns and reliance on support.
The Cognitive Distance Index is the operationalisation that followed. It scores the four dimensions — perceived understanding, predictive accuracy, interaction confidence and conceptual transparency — into a composite running from 0, meaning strong alignment between the user's model and the system's behaviour, to 100, meaning a large gap.
How it is being tested
The Everyday Services Study is the empirical arm of this work. Participants complete three simulated everyday service tasks — a bank transfer, a medical appointment booking, and a driver's licence renewal — and answer short questions about their understanding of what the system did, and why.
The design deliberately separates task success from understanding, because the central claim is that these come apart: people finish tasks they cannot explain. Measuring both is the only way to see the difference.
Detailed methodology, conditions and results are held back while data collection is open, so that people arriving from this page are not primed before taking part. They will be published in full once collection closes.
For researchers and instructors
The study runs in English, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese, takes about fifteen minutes, requires no sign-up, and collects no name, email or IP address. It is suitable for classroom use as a worked example of construct operationalisation, and enquiries about replication or collaboration are welcome.
